Understanding muscular tension.

If a muscle feels tight, it does not necessarily mean that it is ‘short’.

In fact, muscles work a lot like rubber bands. The longer they become, the more tension is created. This tension is protective. If your muscles did not ‘tighten’ as they became longer, then they would be pulled too far and tear in half completely.

Stretching a muscle creates tension. The longer it gets, the more tension.

A muscle that is at ‘normal’ length will exhibit no tension. It will be ready to shorten and lengthen as required.

 

This is why stretching your hamstrings doesn’t work.    Professional athletes are no longer allowed to do static hamstring stretches for this very reason.   Long, ‘flexible’ hamstrings are a recipe for constant tears.

If you’ve been struggling with hamstring tightness – or recurrent tears – then it is highly likely your pelvis is out of alignment.

How to fix your hamstring issues

— If your hamstring tissue is angry and dysfunctional because of recurrent tears, then you need good quality deep tissue treatment to restore health the muscle itself.

— If your hamstrings feel constantly tight, then you need to look at whether the pelvis is contributing to the issue.

— If you are constantly aggravating your hamstring while playing sport, you need to look at your basic strength & fatigue levels.   Strengthening the hamstring is key, but it must be done in a dynamic way.  You cannot get on a hamstring curl machine at the gym at hope it translates to the final quarter when you are chasing someone down the field.
